He can also be out by one of the fielders catching a ball that he has hit before it has bounced on the ground. Each time the two batsmen run successfully between the two sets of stumps, they get one run. If the batsman manages to hit the ball over the rope that marks the boundary when it has bounced or rolled on the ground, he gets four runs. If he hits the ball over the boundary without it bouncing on the ground, then he gets six runs. Each "innings" lasts until 10 out of the 11 batsmen are out (two batsman must always be on the wicket, so one batsman can not bat on his own). Develop cricket from grassroots - Tendulkar

Batting ace champion Sachin Tendulkar has insisted the needs of developing the game from the grassroots level marking an advocacy on the historic occasion of 75 years of India's Test cricket. Tendulkar shared his vision for Indian cricket after saluting all the pioneers of Indian Cricket, past and present for making the game what it is now.

Tendulkar seemed to show his care for the game in India. No wonder he's a great batsman today. He maintained his backing of developing the game saying that it's very vital to take the game to the grassroots level. Cricket needs to be taken to remote places in India and he was confident that it is one of the major points on the BCCI agenda. "That's how this game will get bigger and better," Tendulkar said.

He showed his concern towards the budding players were evident from his speech. "Players from isolated and remote areas simply do not have access to play cricket" he added. He also advised that Provision of opportunities to all players in remote places will introduce and develop cricket in every nook and corner of the country. Tendulkar stressed that if the infrastructure is of high-quality and available to all, the next generation of cricketers will certainly be more talented and more skilled.

His experience in the game spoke a lot. "Cricket is changeable and the change will be very fast". He added a point that keeping pace with time will help to overcome this variation problem. The choice of good players seemed to be his good concern. He provided a clue for this strategy. "when you will have more players playing the game, you will have more players to choose from. That will make sure a good supply of class players in the long run."

Parallel sentiments were shared by the team's cricket manager, Chandu Borde who is also the former captain and chief selector. Cricket is a sport that has a massive worldwide following, largely among countries that were once part of the British Empire. At international level, the major cricketing nations include England, Australia, New Zealand, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, South Africa and the West Indies.

There are a number of different formats of the game, which is part of what leads many to become confused over the way that it is played. Let's take a look at the one-day version of the game.

The game is a competition between two teams, who each have the opportunity to bat during a match for a certain time period. That time period is defined by the number of balls (deliveries) that they face.

Each time will face a maximum number of balls, typically 300. In cricketing terminology, a member of the fielding team (the bowler) bowls six balls in succession (known as an 'over'). So the 300 balls is often expressed as 50 overs (50 lots of 6).

During the 50 overs, the batsmen attempt to score runs, while the fielding team attempt to restrict the number of runs scored. They can achieve this by blocking the ball after the batsman strikes it, thus restricting the time available for the batsmen to run.

Runs can also be restricted by getting the batsman 'out'. This can be achieved in a variety of ways, but chiefly by knocking over the bowler's stumps ('bowled'), catching the ball after the batsman strikes it with his bat ('caught') or striking the batsman on his leg when the ball would otherwise have hit the stumps ('leg before wicket').

Once the batting team lose 10 wickets (that is, they have 10 batsmen out) or reach the end of their allotted 50 overs, whichever comes the sooner, their innings is at an end.

The opposition team then have their opportunity to bat, aiming to reach the total number of runs set both before the 50 overs is up and before they lose 10 wickets.

This is, by necessity, an abridged version of the rules of the game. The game itself has a large number of intricacies and alterations that mean that it can seem more complicated.

Despite this, the beginner's guide should allow you to watch a game of cricket and have some understanding as to what is going on. You can learn the different rules, variations and terms as you go along, but this should provide a starting point.

Hi-Tech Decision Making in Cricket - A Benefit or a Necessary Evil?

Hi-technology decision making is slowly being adopted by cricket, but is it good for the game? The best umpires are respected by players, but does hi-tech analysis help them or undermine their authority? They can have access to slow motion replays, but not the battery of analysis tools at the disposal of the TV commentator. Where do you stand in the debate?

Video analysis of line decisions has been used by officials in tennis and rugby for years, but cricket has many more high-tech options that could be used, if they were allowed by the game's authorities.

A delivery from a 150 kph fast bowler takes only one third of a second to reach the batsman. So, umpires must be highly skilled to judge the length and line of the ball, to make a correct lbw decision. Experience and ability are invaluable here, but it can still be a difficult call, especially as the umpire sees no action replays.

However, televised live cricket coverage has an armoury of high-tech gadgets that could help the umpire, including the Hawk-eye system. Hawk-eye uses 6 cameras placed around the ground to track the flight of the ball, then a computer instantly converts their pictures into a 3D image of the ball's flight. It can follow swing, spin and seam, and predict if the ball would have hit the wicket after hitting a batsman's pad. This gives the TV commentator and viewer an unfair advantage over the umpire in judging an lbw. But, does this undermine an umpire's decision which is based on experience that even a computer can't match? Even Hawk-eye finds it difficult to predict the bounce of a cricket ball, so it may not always be right. So, should Umpires have access to Hawk-eye replays? What do you think? Aside from this great debate, Hawk-eye has also brought benefits to cricket coaches. It can record exactly where the ball pitches, so can give bowlers feedback on their accuracy. It also measures the speed of the ball, showing how much time a batsman has to react. Because of these benefits, the system has been installed at the ECB Academy in Loughborough, to help analyse batting and bowling techniques.

Stump cameras and stump microphones have been part of televised live cricket coverage since the early 1990s. In the mid 1990s, the "snickometer" was devised to use sounds picked up by the stump microphone. The sharp sound of a ball clipping the edge of a bat shows clearly on a graph of sound level. When allied with a slow motion video, this can show clearly if the ball was edged to the wicket keeper, or hit the bat before hitting a pad.

The super slow motion camera takes around 500 frames per second (fps), compared to 24 fps at normal speed. Used since 2005, this is a great tool to analyse run outs and stumpings, and the umpire can refer to these pictures to help with his decisions. But, it's also good for seeing whether or not the ball took a thin deflection off the bat, though the umpire doesn't get this information. Do you think he should?

The latest technology in the commentator's armoury is the "hot spot". This detects if the ball has connected with a player's bat, pad, glove or the ground, using two infra-red cameras. These detect the tiny amount of heat generated from the friction created when two objects collide, such as ball, bat, pad, glove or the ground. This can show if the ball snicked the bat for a catch, or hit bat before pad to determine an lbw dismissal.

The "hot spot" was first used for live cricket coverage by Channel 9 in Australia in 2006. As with the snickometer, the umpire doesn't see its evidence before making a decision.

Eminent commentators and cricketers are divided on whether technology should replace the umpire's judgement for borderline decisions. One side's view is that umpires are a traditional part of the game, and can exercise judgement that technology can not. The other side considers it's more important to make sure that umpiring decisions are right.

There is even an element of history repeating itself - the laws of the game were formalised in 1744, in response to increased gambling on the results of matches. So, will technology fulfil the same need, in the face of internet betting?

How To Choose The Right Cricket Bat

Cricket bats are available with a wide range of features, and choosing one is a very personal decision. There are no right or wrong bats, just the one that feels right for you. Of these features, size and "pick-up" or "feel" are particularly important.

The top of the bat handle should reach the top of a player's thigh, allowing him to take guard with his weight evenly balanced on both feet, and with his eyes level facing the bowler.

The weight of cricket bats varies from around 1lb 11oz for the smallest junior bat to 3lb 4oz for the heaviest full size bat, though anything over 3lb takes considerable strength to wield.

However, the ease of "pick-up" of a bat while batting is more important than its absolute weight, and depends on both the bat size and how the weight is distributed around the blade. Different batsmen prefer different "pick-up", so its important to get the feel of several bats before making a choice.

Pick-up affects bat control, which must be exercised only by the batsman's "top hand" on the bat handle - this is the left hand for a right handed batsman. If he can't play strokes with his top hand alone then the bat is too heavy; his technique will suffer and frustration will follow. It is particularly important for junior batsmen to avoid this, so that they learn the right technique and enjoy batting.

Other features affecting a bat's performance and balance are slight curvature of the bat face to bring the point of impact with the ball below the batsman's eyes, and bat handle technology and varying handle thickness that gives each model a different feel and flexibility.

Cricket bats are made of willow, a soft fine grained wood. Look for 7 or 8 straight grains in the willow across a bat's face for the optimum sensitivity and durability. Fewer grains are more durable but less sensitive, more grains are more sensitive and less durable.

Before use, "untreated" new bats need oiling lightly with raw linseed oil, then, "knocking in" with an old ball or a bat mallet, to compress the fibers of the willow on the face and edges in preparation for hitting a hard cricket ball. Knocking in a new bat can take several hours.

However, many new bats are now pre-knocked in and oiled, with a clear anti-scuff cover applied to face and edges to improve durability. These bats only need around 45 minutes to one hour of knocking in, and a light covering of oil on uncovered parts of the blade. Another addition might be a rubberized toe guard, to prevent damp seeping into the willow. These extras are good news for all players, especially young ones who will be keen to use their new bat as soon as possible.

Most cricket bat manufacturers use a star rating system to indicate the quality of a bat - the more stars, the better the quality of the willow and/or the level of technology of the bat. However, top of the range bats are unnecessary for most players, so consider all the factors in this article before you part with your money!

Who's Who in the Cricket World

Its a formidable challenge for cricket fans to agree who are the best teams in the world, and who are the best current and past players. You might think that a sport that generates so many statistics could easily provide the facts and figures to solve this challenge, but it isn't so easy. The test playing nations don't play the same number of games; opponents vary in strength, and there's no set representative period for calculating ranking points.

For example, a strong side like South Africa might easily beat a developing team like Bangladesh in a 5 match test series. But, how should that compare with a hard fought series between say, India and Pakistan? Sir Donald Bradman had a test match batting average of over 99, but how should this be compared with today's stars of world cricket who play far more tests, but where a batting average of over 50 is considered as outstanding?

Various dedicated fans have developed rating systems to solve these problems. These rank individual players by awarding points or by calculating batting/bowling averages. Ranking periods range from 18 months to a whole career. None are perfect, but the best known system was developed by Price Waterhouse Coopers (accountants), and is now used by the ICC.

The ICC rankings rate players on a 0-1000 point scale, separately for tests and ODIs. They consider the runs scored or wickets taken, the ratings of their opponents, the total runs scored in a game and the match result. These rankings are a moving average, so if a player's performance improves on his past record, his rating increases. But, it reduces if his form declines.

This is great for comparing current and past players. The calculations are pretty complex, but the ICC player comparison tool does all the work for us. Try comparing Sir Len Hutton and Brian Lara, and see if it solves your after dinner debate about who is the best. It's clever stuff, but of course it's only as good as the rules for awarding rating points.

Team ranking systems are equally complicated. The first system for test teams was devised in 1995 by Wisden, and awarded points for a team's performance in recent test series. This was used by the ICC from 2001, when the global test championship was inaugurated. But, the system didn't take account of the relative strength of opponents, and a new test championship system was adopted in 2005.

This was devised by David Kendix, a cricket scorer and an actuary. It works like a batting average - a winning team improves its average/ranking while a losing team sees its ranking fall. Tests and ODIs use different variations of this system.

The "official" ICC-Kendix system is comprehensive, but there are still several others that are based on points, ratings, averages or some combination of these. They show that cricket records are a statistician's dream, but what do they all prove?

The bottom line is that Australia are currently top of all the different rankings for tests and ODIs. South Africa are rated second in all ODI rankings, and England are second in all but one of the test match ratings. The official ICC ratings give definitive league tables.

So much for rankings, but there's far more to world cricket than number crunching. The "premier league" of world cricket comprises ten nations who play each other in test matches, ODIs, the Cricket World Cup and the ICC Champions Trophy. However the ICC World Cricket League includes 87 other nations who don't have test status, but do play ODI cricket. These form five global divisions, and take part in five regional ODI tournaments.

Kenya are the present WCL champions, and the six members of WCL division one qualified for the 2007 Cricket World Cup, alongside the test playing nations. There are financial benefits for achieving test match status and for playing in the world cup, which in turn aids cricket development. So, the WCL promotes cricket development and offers non test playing nations a route through to cricket's "premier league".

The world test cricket championship, ODI rankings, world cricket league and player ratings are relatively new. Whether you love or hate them, they give cricket real global interest which is great for the sport. But despite all this science, will fans ever agree who is the best?

Top Tips for Cricket Bowlers

Bowling isn't a natural activity for most people, and it's important to get the basics right to avoid injury. There is lots of fine detail to think about, but keeping it simple is the best way to perform well and stay injury free. There is an ECB Directive that limits the number of overs that juniors can bowl, depending on age group. This is to make sure that fatigue injuries don't develop. Many juniors want to be tearaway fast bowlers like Brett Lee or Shoaib Akhtar. The first steps toward this are not to have long, energy consuming run ups, but to perfect a correct "one step" action before trying to go faster.

The run up should be smooth, balanced, rhythmic and consistent. Many juniors do run too far, and many don't mark the length of their run up properly. For speed or spin, the aim is to have an identical run up for every ball. It's all about rhythm!

Actions can be side-on, front-on or midway, and are controlled by the landing position of the back foot. Side-on actions mean that the back foot lands parallel to the bowling crease, so the shoulders and hips point at the batsman before the delivery stride. Front-on actions mean that the back foot and chest point toward the batsman.

Brett Lee has a classic side-on action, while Andrew Flintoff is front-on.

Both styles are correct, but mixing them so that the body is twisted will lead to injuries. This is difficult to spot at full speed, but freeze-frame footage from a video camera is very helpful. You can help the coach by showing him suitable video stills.

The leading arm is the "rudder" for bowling straight. It should start as high and as vertical as possible, then be pulled down to form an arc in line with the wickets during the delivery stride. You can stand behind the bowler to check if he is doing this correctly.

The eyes should stay level and focussed on the target from the start of the run up, through delivery and to the end of the follow through. This isn't an easy habit to develop, but is key to delivering a straight ball. Once the head begins to tilt, the bowlers accuracy suffers. Try watching from behind the batsman to check this.

Good bowlers work in "straight lines" - straight run up, straight follow through, high front arm, high delivery point and eyes level. Easier said than done sometimes, but keeping it as simple as this does work wonders!

The Basics of Cricket Batting

Successful batsmen make batting look simple because they get the basics right. Of course, good technique doesn't just happen. A respected Australian coach at my club demonstrates skills with the message "practice that 100 times a day and you'll soon get the hang of it!". Practice does make perfect.

This article isn't intended to be part of a coaching manual, but some coaching points arise so often at junior practice that it's worth repeating a few of them here. You could treat these as background if you're using coaching books, videos or online coaching resources.

Remember, cricket is generally a "sideways game" - the "side on" position figures highly in most cricketing skills.

Most batting errors result from "bad set up" - in grip, stance and backswing. Get this right and success will follow. Encourage practice in front of a mirror (without breaking it, as I once did). Or use a video camera, as freeze-frame can be a great coaching tool.

The hands should be close together in the centre of the handle. The "V" between the thumb and forefinger of each hand should be in line, between the outside edge and splice.

To find this position, try resting the handle on the inside of the leading thigh, with the blade forward, and place both hands on the handle naturally - they should then be close to the correct grip.

The feet should be around one foot length apart, parallel to and each side of the popping crease. The weight should be balanced equally on the balls of each foot. Bend the knees slightly to avoid overbalancing to the off side.

The eyes must be level, facing the bowler - open the front shoulder slightly to make this easier.

The backswing must be controlled by the top hand on the handle, and be directly over the wickets. Roll the front shoulder slightly downwards as the bat is raised. Rest the bottom hand lightly on the handle - try holding a squash ball against the handle to lift the bottom hand off it, and remember how this feels.

Batsmen can only defend their wickets if the know where they are. Yes, obvious - but how to achieve this? Ask your junior player to adjust his stance along the crease until his head is in line with middle stump, then mark the ground so he remembers this position.

The head should move into the line of the ball as soon as possible, and watch the ball "onto the bat". Amazingly, few junior players can do this intuitively without extensive practice.

Watch how the experts do the basics. Michael Vaughan, Rahul Dravid and Ricky Ponting are classic stylists, and great models for junior players to copy. But, they didn't become this good overnight - even the stars need to keep practising!

Cricket Games - Better than the Real Thing?

Computer cricket games are all part of the fun for most junior cricketers (and some senior ones). Year 1991: Indian economy liberalised, come year 2007, Indian cricket may be liberalised. Take a look at this ... Modis, Dalmias, Shrirams, Nambiars and Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Do you find something fishy in this? Well, you must be wondering how come BCCI is featured next to the illustrious business groups. Flabbergasted, bewildered, stunned...??? Some of you may come with an argument that huge revenues generated by BCCI have earned them the position. No... noway, we don't want to highlight that, it's an old stale stinky news. We have something much more interesting to uncover. When economy was liberalising, the above mentioned companies didn't quickly adapted to the changing dynamics. Ultimately, they succumbed to the challenges thrown by post liberalisation scenario and now exist in an ordinary fashion. The same can happen to BCCI, if they didn't acclimatize to the changing scenario and that too quickly and competitively. The change is Essel Group's Indian Cricket League (ICL) which is aggressively making significant headways day by day. It looks like a ditto remake of Kerry Packer's action-packed thriller, which gave rise to one-day cricket.

The fear of losing out the battle to the competition has already started developing in the BCCI's camp. At the moment, BCCI is neither teaming up with ICL nor its taking the competition in a healthy manner. In fact it is implementing all types of unfair and unethical tactics to put a break on ICL's cruise by blacklisting players, selectors and whosoever associated with path-breaking ICL. For Subhash Chandra, mentor of ICL, it will be a remake of his own successful flick of 1990s in which he broke the monopoly of Doordarshan in the television space. Well, the dawn of cricket liberalisation is not about to begin, it has already started.

It's already 1-0 in an on-going tight match between ICL v/s BCCI. On September 6, 2007, BCCI received a first sign of its crumbling monopoly. The Monopolies and Restrictive Trade Practices Commission ordered Director General of Investigation and Registration to probe the allegations that BCCI has threatened players of life-time ban if they play for ICL. If found guilty BCCI would be asked to roll back its steps. Analysing the situation on a macro level, BCCI has been the only buyer of cricket talent and wants to do so in future also. Doesn't this remind you of Pre-liberalisation era where phenomena like monopoly, black marketing and all existed? It's strange that the board has been able to do so for such a long time in a country where cricket is only next to a religion and billion of hopes are attached with it. Rahul Mehra, the only lawyer who has won a case against BCCI says "This is not the first instance, this had happened in 90's too. MRTP secures that no individual organization has monopoly. With BCCI threatening to take away the benefits from players joining ICL, all this will have major impact in the court. It's going to be a battle of egos. 75 years of cricket or not, BCCI's threats are illegal. These are grey areas, very crucial indeed because nobody has treaded these paths before, so it's going to be very interesting to wait and watch how the court handles it. BCCI has gained its monopoly from the grass root level, under its aegis all local teams are registered and non members are left at the outskirts. MRTP is indeed a very welcome change."

The gargantuan task that stands in front of Chandra is how will he recreate stars out of retired players, new kids and one who have been washed-off from spectators' heart because of their run of the mill performance. Even more worrying factor for Chandra is who will watch the game without the main league stars and ultimately without stars and without watchers who will bet on ICL and provide sponsorship. Chandra should not forget that even at Ranji level lot of senior members and stars are playing but it is yet to make a mark in the hearts of spectators and sponsors. Thus, a big question mark remains on ICL's capability to magnetize the spectators. One more challenge will be develop a passion in the game. It will become all the more difficult with a team comprised of various nationalities. Audience will be confused on the front - which side to take? For this ICL needs to do take lessons from the failure of Premier Hockey League and success of EPL, English Cricket County and other highly successful leagues. In some cases leagues have generated more money and followings than the respective official board. Well, ICL won't face a much problem in magnetizing the sponsors since there's already huge media hype around the league. West Indies Cricket Suffering At The Hands Of Poor Management

When I listen to or read the various arguments about the demise of West Indies Cricket it never ceases to amaze me how the slant of the argument all ways seem to go towards the lack of talent and the attitudes of the current players.

Even when the discussion leans towards the lack of cricket infrastructure and the poor management of limited cricket resources in the region, the conclusion still is that better attitudes by the current players is all that is needed.

This leads to the question of which should come first the players attitudes or improve management of the cricket resources and a more sophisticated infrastructure.

I am among those who believe that the underdevelopment of West Indies Cricket is entirely due to poor management and the lack of planning by the cricket authorities in the Caribbean. This poor management is to be blame for the player’s attitudes and the inferior cricket structure upon which our beloved game is built.

The counter argument often is that seventeen years ago the West Indies were rated number one with this same inferior structure. It is this argument that disappoints me even more than the ridiculous lows that the team has reach on the field of play.

Because even though at face value this may appear to be so, those of us with an interment knowledge of what made the West Indian cricketer superior before the mid 1990’s, recognize that these factors are no longer present on the regional landscape.

Life in the West Indies has changed and these changes have filtered into our cricket. During the golden days of our cricket history ninety percent of the boy in any village played some form of the game; if you were to do an analysis in today’s environment only ten percent of the boys are playing cricket.

This has resulted in a significant reduction in our cricket playing numbers, as a small cricket nation these lower numbers are not helping our cause. If we were to compare the West Indies with a population of 6 million people to cricket super powers Australia with a population of approximately 19 million people it would suggest that for every 1 high quality cricketer West Indies produce the Australians will produce 3.

Now this is where proper planning and management comes in Australia with more human and financial resources recognized that times were changing and that sound cricket structures had to be put in place. On the other hand the West Indian authorities with significantly less human and financial resources have left our cricket development totally up to chance.

Hoping for a cricket super star in the image of Headley, Sobers, Richards or Lara to appear out of thin air. They seem oblivious to the fact that the great cricketers of the pass were shape by a more nurturing environment.

An environment that included the informal village academies and mentoring systems previously found in the side roads and on the beaches where cricket 101 was taught to the youngsters by the village pros.

The second factor, which had a major impact, was the professional contracts for West Indian players on the English county circuit, these no longer exist in the same portions.

With all these changes taking place it is important that the West Indies Cricket board establish centers of excellence. The centers should be in place from the junior level to harness the skills of our most talented young players.

Only then will the Caribbean be able to produce the type of team that can adequately represent the proud cricket heritage establish by the legends of West Indies Cricket.
